Parent Center Wish List

Coffee For Parents
Did you know that parents show up to volunteer at LACES all the time?  They meet to support the teachers, staff and students.   Of course not all of us have time to volunteer but we still want to be supportive.  Here's a great way for you to help.    Can you pick up some coffee for the parent center?

The next time you are at Trader Joes or your favorite market can you pick up a can or two of ground coffee?

Or can you pick up some k-cups at your local market.  Or you can order online from Amazon and have delivered to school.

LACES
5931 W. 18th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90035

We also need 10 oz cups (both hot & cold)

And small paper plates.

A Lap Top Computer is Needed--Big Time!

Calling all parents .....we need your assistance big time!

Lana in the office deals with:
Attendance, Bus Transport Files,  ALL CIF sports,  Senior lunch file & Passes, Magnet Files, Sports Roster along with generating the magnet newsletter, acceptance notification letters and much, much, much more.  Obviously, you get the drift, Lana is super hard working and does a lot for our kids--and us.

Unfortunately,  Lana's laptop crashed.  Not a little crash but a big fat, Indy 500 pile up type of crash.   Her laptop is morte and she is desperate for a new one.

Do you have a gently used lap top that you can donate?
Do you have a brother or friend who might have a laptop hanging around because he is addicted to Fry's and replaces laptops every six months?

Or do you want to contribute to a fund so we can get Lana a laptop?
Anyone have Best Buy gift cards lying around?

Susan Yamasaki is point person for this important wish.

Please email her:  swyama@sbcglobal.net

Let's get this done!!!

I Pad Mini drawing

At the FOL meeting on October 24, all names of the people who donated at the Friend Level or higher were put into a stunning pumpkin.  A name was drawn and the winners of the iPad mini were the Scharf (Leo & Simon) family.     The Scharf's will receive their iPad mini this week.  Thanks to all our participants.

Our Update

Our new total as of November 5 is

$115,000

The good news is that we are ahead of where we were last year.  The bad news is we are still short our goal of $200,000.

Thanks to our parents who are signed up for monthly payments we will bring in close to $2,000 a month which by the time we get to June will be another $12,000.   So that means we are coming in about $70,000 short our $200k.

If you have not made your donation...please do it.

We obviously will take donations all year but the sooner you get it to us then we can put it into the budget.

And remember we love monthly payments.  So, if you want to commit to $50 a month you will be helping a lot.  If we could get the total of our monthly payments to $5K a month we will end up with $30K by June.

Where are you?

Did you know that there are approximately 1200 families at LACES?
Did you know that so far we have less than 400 families donate to Direct Donation?

Where are you?

Did you know that we are currently at $94,000 in donations?    If we had another 400 families donate at the same rate we will be very close to our goal of $200,000.

Where are you?

Did you know that our goal is $200,000  because our teachers and the department chairs have been going without for too long.

Where are you?

Did you know that if we only raise $150,000 or less we won't have any money for departments?  We will cover only the basics including just photocopying.

Where are you?

Did you know our teachers and staff believe our students deserve updated Maps, audio equipment that works, swimsuits for students in need, art supplies?

Where are you?

Ipad drawing....

The Direct Donation Team and the LACES Treasurers are working hard to make sure all families who donated between August until October 6 will be put into the ipad drawing. It will take this week to reconcile all the names and donations. Once we have all the names we will have the drawing.

Our Update

Around 340 families have contributed as of today 10/14.

When you Donate --- Consider a good S T R E T C H

So this question has come up lately:

"Why should I give more than $120?"

Because:

The History Department does not have updated maps.  Our students are looking at maps with USSR on them.

Art class is better when you have paint, glaze, and a working kiln.

Aquatic class is more inclusive when swimsuits can be provided for students who cannot afford them.

Dancing is more efficient when the teachers have a working sound system.

There are LACES students who are treading water in their writing skills.  A Writers workshop would raise the tide for all our students.

If we had more PE equipment the kids would be able to do more than just run the mile.

We are in second largest city in the United States.  On any given day there are venues offering first class field trips.   It would be nice if LACES students could go on Field Trips.   For example:  The Pompeii Exhibit at The California Science Center would connect with the curriculum for various grades.

Tomorrow’s jobs will be in programing, robotics and other areas that will need workers who are well versed in new technology.   As hard as it is to believe, just because a kid can download Youtube or play a game on a phone or computer does NOT make them technologically savvy.    Our students will be on an advanced track if LACES had more computer labs, soft ware and robotic parts.

When you donate more than $120 you are supporting LACES in these areas and more.  This is what our teachers and departments would like to bring to LACES.  Please stretch your donation to help our school retain its excellence.

S T R E T C H  YOURSELF…..CONSIDER DONATING ABOVE THE FRIEND LEVEL!

What is Direct Donation?

As you all know in the fall of 2008 the economy crashed and the first wave of hurt crashed on public schools.

Since 2008, parents at LAUSD schools had to make a choice.  "Do we sit here and let the cuts happen and just let our students do without?"   or "Do we ask our parents to step up and make up the difference?"     If we were lucky, we came from an elementary school where the parents said, "Heck no! We aren't going to go without!"    And so it is at LACES.

This spring, new members of the Direct Donation team found out the needs of the Departments --- For example, History teachers need new maps.   Dance department has a broken sound system.  PE needs swimsuits for kids in need.  English needs Writing Workshops.   It is a compelling list of needs; you can check the Donation form for more item breakdowns.

In addition, we talked to Principal Boger about his vision for LACES.   He told us that one of his priorities is to improve the technology program. He told us that tomorrow’s job market will rely on workers having a vast understanding of technology.  Therefore, it is important that students know how to use computers in the most productive way by the time they graduate High School.  Also, Mr. Boger does not believe that The District will be buying any new computers for LACES before 2022.   We will be long gone if we wait for them!

Since 2008 none of these things have been included in "the ask" for the Direct Donation Campaign.   It is our goal to uptick our donations this year so we can start to cover these much-needed requests.

You can donate on the Friend Level for $120 a year
You can donate on the Patron Level for $300 a year
You can donate on the Benefactor Level for $600 a year.

If you don't want to write one check, you may make a monthly donation of $10 a month (Friend level) $25 a month (Patron Level) and $50 a month (Benefactor Level).
If you want to donate below $120 or over $600 we'll take that, too!  Nothing too low or too high, it is all good.

We are all in this together.   Remember the difference between a GOOD school and a GREAT school is funding by parents.   We can do it!

Also---don't forget to ask your employer if they have a matching fund.

Many of them will match whatever you donate!!

Current Update: As of September 15

Did you know?

Four Grande Starbucks Latte a week between now and June is $600.

Two Grande Starbucks Latte a week between now and June is $300.

One Grande Starbuck Latte a week between now and June is $150.

Is your child's school worth a Starbucks Latte?

YES.

The Different Levels in Direct Donation

You can donate on the Friend Level for $120 a year
You can donate on the Patron Level for $300 a year

You can donate on the Benefactor Level for $600 a year.

What do the different levels mean?

A donation of $120 will take care of the LACES/FOL yearly budget.  This includes basic needs.

A donation of $300 a year will take care of the basic yearly budget PLUS support the department heads.   --- For example, History teachers need new maps.   Dance department has a broken sound system.  PE needs swimsuits for kids in need.  English needs Writing Workshops.   It is a compelling list of needs; you can check the Donation form for more item breakdowns.

A donation of $600 will take care of basic yearly needs, plus the department heads AND will take care of  Principal Boger and his vision for LACES  including new computer LABS.     Also, Mr. Boger does not believe that The District will be buying any new computers for LACES before 2022.   We will be long gone if we wait for them!

How are we looking?

LACES has approximately 1600 students made up by about 1200 families.

As of September 15

165 families have contributed to the Direct Donation Campaign.

This is decent start but we need WAY more families to contribute.

If you have not made your donation yet, now is the time to do it.

If you have not made your donation because you do not believe you can make a donation of $120 (The Friend Level) that is fine.  Make a donation that is comfortable for you.   Our goal is $200,000 and 100%participation.   If everyone donates we will make our goal.
